            एक बार दरबार में बैठे हुए सम्राट चंद्रगुप्त ने चाणक्य से कहा, “गुरुदेव, काश आप खूबसूरत होते?” चन्द्रगुप्त के ऐसा बोलने पर सारे दरबारी उनकी तरफ देखने लगे। परंतु चाणक्य ने शांत स्वभाव से कहा,‘राजन, इंसान की पहचान उसके गुणों से होती है, रूप से नहीं।’ तब चंद्रगुप्त ने चाणक्य के जवाब से संतुष्ट न होते हुए पूछा, ‘क्या कोई ऐसा उदाहरण दे सकते हो जहां गुण के सामने रूप छोटा रह गया हो?’ तब चाणक्य ने दो गिलास पानी मंगाया। और राजा को पानी पीने को दिया। जब चन्द्रगुप्त ने पानी पी लिया फिर चाणक्य ने कहा,   ‘पहले गिलास का पानी सोने के घड़े से लाया गया था। और दूसरे गिलास का पानी मिट्टी के घड़े से लाया गया था। आपको कौन सा पानी अच्छा लगा।’       चंद्रगुप्त उत्तर देते हुए बोले, ‘मटकी से भरे गिलास का पानी अच्छा था।’ नजदीक ही सम्राट चंद्रगुप्त की पत्नी मौजूद थीं, वह चाणक्य द्वारा दिए गए इस उदाहरण से काफी प्रभावित हुई। उन्होंने कहा,        ‘वो सोने का घड़ा किस काम का जो एक इंसान की प्यास न बुझा सके। मटकी भले ही कितनी भी ...

         एक साधारण व्यक्ति का जीवन बड़ा ही कठिन है। एक क्षण तो सोचता है कि तू अभाव में है, तेरे पास यह भी होना चाहिए, वह भी होना चाहिए। परंतु दूसरे ही क्षण विचार करता है कि यह सब मोह माया है, जितना मिलेगा उतनी ही इच्छा बढ़ेगी। तुझसे अच्छा तो वही है, जिसे खाने के लिए भी तरसना पड़ता है, कम से कम उसकी इच्छाएँ तो सीमित हैं। ईश्वर से यही प्रार्थना करता हूँ कि यदि किसी को भोगी बनाए तो उसे सँसार की प्रत्येक वस्तु को भोगने का सामर्थ्य दे, अन्यथा सभी को योगी ही बनाए, ताकि किसी के मन में हीन भावना  न आए।         The life of a common man is very tough.
